It’s been a while since we’ve updated the 2018 Notre Dame football big board, largely because not a whole lot was happening. A few guys here and there committed to this school or visited that one, but that was it. Now that the season has started and everyone’s boards are a bit tighter and official visits are happening, things should develop quicker. With that in mind, we wanted to put together a summary of the current board so you all have a clear picture of where the Irish stand today. We’ll list everyone still technically on the board, but for the most part only give updates on kids still considering Notre Dame. Unless there’s some weird shtuff going down that’s worth talking about, of course. We’re nothing if not gossipy.
A few things to keep in mind as you peruse the board:
Notre Dame currently has 16 commits, and presumably is aiming for 6-8 more. At times it feels like the target is even higher, but it’s very hard to see how the numbers could work out. In any case, keep in mind that space in this class is extremely limited, so you would expect the board to be somewhat reduced. In other words, it’s not that surprising (or worrying) to see so many “Cold” prospects.
The 247 Composite scores are a great reference point, but we know many of our readers aren’t, um, dedicated enough to know offhand how they translate to rankings. So… Usually, .9800 is at or just below the cutoff for five-star status, which 247 awards to the top 32 prospects in their final rankings. .9500 is just about where the top 100 breaks, .9200 where the top 200 breaks, and .9000 at or a little above where the top 300 breaks. Those could move a little bit from year to year, but they’re going to be at least ballpark equivalents.
Finally, a quick key on our temperature ratings. “Cold” essentially means you can forget about a prospect – either he has eliminated us or has never shown any interest. “Cool” means there has been some contact and some level of interest, but as of today the Irish would be the longest of long shots. “Mild” means he’s taking a serious look, at least, and/or has Notre Dame in his final group. “Mild+” means Notre Dame is probably the leader, but there’s still a ways to go. “Warm” means the Irish are almost certainly either the leader or co-leader, and a decision could be coming soon. “Hot,” which we almost never use, is pretty much synonymous with “Commit Watch.’

Notes
Jamaree Salyer planned to take an official visit for the Georgia game, but was forced to cancel after a death in the family. He has said he intends to reschedule. The Irish are playing from behind here with Clemson and Georgia, but there is legitimate interest.
Sam Taimani loved his unofficial visit over the summer. He has tabbed Notre Dame as one of his five official visits, but he hasn’t locked in a date yet.
Mater Dei (CA) product Chris Murray is Notre Dame’s most recent line offer, as he joined the list in August. He had very complimentary things to say then and emphatically said he wanted to visit, but like Taimani, nothing is scheduled yet.
Elite tackle Nick Petit-Frere visited over the summer and is expected to official as well. The Floridian is a great fit for Notre Dame on an off the field, but distance could be a concern – or more accurately, a concern for his mother. Alabama and Florida loom large here as well. The official visit will be huge.
Tommy Tremble also was a scratch for Georgia weekend, but in his case it was because he broke his ankle in the first game of his season and wasn’t allowed to travel. Look for him to reschedule a visit once he’s healed enough to get on a plane. In the “small consolations” department, the Georgia football legacy (and double Georgia legacy) predicted an Irish win over Georgia.
Amon-Ra St. Brown is marked as “Mild” because he continues to say the right things about Notre Dame. Realistically, though, the Irish are probably a long shot and USC is in the driver’s seat. His current quarterback, 2019 five-star JT Daniels, recently committed to USC, which many expect tilted the balance heavily in their favor for St. Brown. He intends to take an official visit for the USC game.
Kamryn Babb visited Notre Dame over the summer and was intrigued enough to talk about a possible official visit, but the Irish are an extreme long shot right now. He tore his ACL in a preseason practice but it hasn’t slowed his recruitment down at all, which tells you what kind of prospect he is. Ohio State is his likely destination.
Oregon legacy Chase Cota just visited for the Georgia game with both parents, and by all accounts the Irish staff knocked this visit out of the park. He could very well prove too difficult to get away from the West Coast, but Notre Dame has done everything it can to increase his comfort level. Cota saw that he’s a great fit on and off the field and he has bonded well with a number of the commits in the 2018 class. It’s also worth noting that Bill Polian, father of current special teams coordinator Brian Polian, signed Chase’s father Chad to the Indianapolis Colts back in the day. Chad is familiar with Brian and others in Indiana, so there could be more of a comfort level there than it might seem at first.
Louisiana speedster Lawrence Keys has been on the radar for a long time and also says all the right things about Notre Dame. He hasn’t visited yet but says he intends to; if that visit doesn’t materialize, you can take him off the board.
Kobe Smith was one of two receivers offered the day that Braden Lenzy decommitted. He’s listening to Notre Dame right now but it’s not clear if it’s anything more serious than that. This feels like a kid who will stay out west.
Geordon Porter is the other guy; he just used his official visit for the Georgia game. Still some distance to go here, but based on his reaction – he was blown away by everything about the school, telling the South Bend Tribune’s Tyler James that he had “never seen a football game like that ever in my life” and tweeting about it for days afterward – Â it seems safe to say that the Irish took the lead. Didn’t hurt that he ran into Tim Brown and Jerome Bettis, either… Of note, Porter just broke current Detroit Lion Marvin Jones’s school record for all-purpose yards in a game in his opener; he also ran a 10.68 100M last spring as a junior. Not too shabby.
One of those gossipy things, by the way: Elite WR Justin Watkins has already decommitted twice – once from Florida State and once from Texas. Notre Dame isn’t remotely in play; in fact, Alabama is widely considered his new leader. No doubt his recruitment will go to signing day no matter what or when he announces. ‘Crootin.

Notes
Houston Griffith, somewhat surprisingly, returned to the radar after apparently disappearing for months. The staff kept on him and it paid off in the form of an official visit for the Georgia game. How interested is he really? It’s very hard to tell as he keeps pretty quiet about his recruitment. But the Irish are in it, at least.
Kalon Gervin is another returnee to the board; most of you will probably remember that the Detroit Cass Tech prospect decommitted in May and had some unkind words about the staff’s effort. Few believed him at the time, and it appears the staff disproved the notion anyway by getting him back to campus for an unofficial visit. He just took an official visit to Oklahoma, where no doubt Kerry Cooks filled his head with his usual garbage. Gervin said he intends to take an official visit for the USC game; if that visit happens, I like our chances to overcome Cooks’s influence.
Kyler Gordon took an official visit for the Temple game; he and his mother reportedly loved everything they saw. He could be a tough pull from the Northwest, with Stanford and hometown Washington also well-positioned, but Notre Dame did everything it could to state its case. He’s from Keivarae Russell’s town, which I supposed could cut either way…
Noah Boykin is the newest addition to the board regardless of position, picking up an offer on Monday. The Washington DC athlete is committed to Maryland, but don’t let that fool you; he has offers from Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Tennessee, USC, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin, among many others. He’s open to other schools and told 247’s Steve Wiltfong that he’ll visit Notre Dame soon. The Irish will look to continue their luck from last cycle, when they flipped Kofi Wardlow and Jon Doerer from Maryland.
Tariq Bracy is a plus athlete who will need some work defensively but has big upside. The Californian’s career so far includes 2,313 rushing yards at 9.1 yards per carry, 1,543 receiving yards at 20.6 yards per reception, 44 offensive touchdowns, 3 defensive touchdowns, 3 special teams touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He does a little bit of everything. He said back in the summer that he thinks highly of Notre Dame and wants to visit, but he doesn’t have anything locked in just yet.
Georgian Donte Burton hasn’t been shy about naming Notre Dame his leader, even though has has never visited – a summer visit fell through, and he couldn’t schedule his official yet because he had to take his ACT. If he eventually makes it to campus, you could probably put him on commit watch. His ranking isn’t great but his film is impressive, showcasing plus man coverage skills.
Solomon Tuliaupupu was completely off the radar until recently, when he said he’d like to use one of his official visits for Notre Dame. USC is the leader here, and I think it’s pretty much a done deal for them; still, he wants to visit, and you never know. You would think the Irish are full at linebacker, but this is the kind of kid you would take no matter what and figure out where to put someone else.
Talented safety Julius Irvin just visited for Georgia weekend with his father, LeRoy Irvin, and both were blown away. If you’re a football fan in your 40’s or so, you may remember LeRoy – he was a Pro Bowl defensive back for the Rams in the 80’s. He and Todd Lyght just missed each other in LA, but they know each other well and that’s definitely a factor here. Washington and UCLA are big players in this recruitment as well, but I like where Notre Dame sits right now.
Reading the tea leaves, it seems like Notre Dame is keeping Paul Moala, D’Angelo McKenzie, Chris Mitchell, and BJ Crim in a bit of a holding pattern pending Irvin’s decision. Moala has visited unofficially for Irish Invasion and both home games this year. McKenzie visited with his father over the summer and probably would’ve committed on the spot if the staff let him. Mitchell hasn’t visited yet but has remained in touch with the staff and plans to schedule an official visit at some point. Crim, who doesn’t have an offer yet, was going to visit for Georgia but had to cancel due to Hurricane Irma. He’s working on rescheduling.
Thomas Booker looks to be the annual Top Guy Stanford and Notre Dame Will Fight Over. He reportedly favored Stanford for a long time, even spending a couple of weeks on campus auditing classes in 2016, but didn’t get an offer. Then he was on commit watch as a summer visit to Notre Dame loomed, and magically a Stanford offer materialized. Ah, that David Shaw, such a good-natured kidder of a guy… Many, including yours truly, figured the race was over at that point. But he’s had that Stanford offer for three months now and he still hasn’t committed.
Booker just released a top five of Notre Dame, Stanford, Penn, Princeton, and Harvard. He wants big time football, so he’s not going to the Ivy League, but that’s still a pretty freaking impressive final group. He also just visited Notre Dame for the Temple game and loved it. You can expect him to visit Stanford at some point but nothing is scheduled yet. He has built a strong relationship with the Irish coaches and other commits (including his former teammate and current friend Ja’mion Franklin), and I think Notre Dame being on him longer will be meaningful. I’m cautiously optimistic.
Jayson Oweh might manage to get an official visit in to Notre Dame – he said he wants to, but I’m not sold it will actually happen. I think his parents like Notre Dame more than his other finalists, Ohio State and Penn State, but he himself has little to no interest. In fact, I almost marked him as Cold, but he did say he’s going to visit. So, there’s that, anyway.
Joseph Ossai was also in for the Temple game and seems to have had a good visit, but I’m not sure it moved the needle enough to pull him out of Texas. If Kevin Sumlin gets canned this could get interesting, but right now it seems unlikely that the Irish will get his signature.
Expect more WDE offers to go out as senior film becomes available.
Great work – y’all make it very digestible for those of us who are vaguely aware of what’s going on, but only through Irish Illustrated tweets and whatnot. It does seem to confirm what I had gathered about the class going forward, which seems to be, basically:
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Does that mean a so-so class, or that the eight ball says “Picture is cloudy” about how it’ll close? I agree with the second, not the first. We have more defensive difference makers in this class than in any I can remember. Jaylon and Te’o were awesome, but I don’t think any class in the 15 years or so that I’ve been following recruiting has had a group like Allen, Lamb, Simon, and Ademilola. That’s top 150 talent at each level of the defense (and Allen and Ademilola should really be top 50).
As to how it’ll close, yeah, I have absolutely no idea. Too many variables. I think a lot of guys are probably still in “show me” mode with the on-field product, just like the fans are, so there won’t be much buzz until/unless we get on a roll. I think the staff is banking on getting on a roll, fwiw, and they’re willing to be slow-played by kids. It’s going to be an interesting stretch run, for sure.
Stretch run will be important and hopefully we can close a few guys we’d like to, but barring major defections we’re locked into a top 15 recruiting class. I know that’s not quite the bar we want to set for annual expectations, but it’s not like the program is imploding on the recruiting front.
Yep. I think our most likely finish with a good season (9-3 or better) is 8th to 10th, while our mostly finish with a meh season (8-4 or 7-5) is 10th to 14th, probably. If the season goes worse than that – which at this point would require going 4-5 or worse the rest of the way – Kelly would probably be out and who knows what would happen, but where the class ranks would be the least of our concerns at that point.
If there are a couple of really stunning positive surprises – like we land Salyer and St. Brown – I could see us climbing up to 6th, maybe. But that’s pretty unlikely.
Scanning the 247 crooting rankings, it’s a bit of a bummer to see Penn State so highly ranked. It seems they may have passed us in the current midwestern power rankings not only in terms of this year’s on-field product, but also going forward.
Interestingly, ND’s still doing well in PA, especially Western PA where a lot of time in the past it would seem like those kids are just automatically PSU bound. I looked at PSU commits out of curiosity and they have Eastern PA/NJ and then some MD and Northern VA (where their QB is from too) so their new pipelines seem to be more on the I-95 corridor, and then tOSU and ND are really taking the prime kids from around Pittsburgh. I guess luckily ND grabbed guys from east-PA/NJ like Fuller and Wimbush and maybe even McGlinchey before Franklin got them fully back on track.
I’m kind of surprised that with some talent in the private schools in MD/DC that Notre Dame doesn’t have a better foothold, but so it goes.
I think three games is a bit early to say that they’ve passed us in terms of this year’s on-field product. They’ve looked good against Pitt and two creampuffs. They had a great year last year, which is why they have a great class so far this year – winning tends to do that (see: ND’s #3 class in 2013). It’s not all sunshine and roses, as they’ve had two five-stars – #1 overall QB Justin Fields and #5 overall WDE Micah Parsons – decommit and they’re not going to get either one back. But, all the same, obviously a great year. Franklin went 7-6 in each of his first two years in Happy Valley and followed it up with last year’s impressive 11-3 season. His records at Vandy were built on a lot of fluff. I’m interested to see if he can build on last year’s momentum or if he’ll go back to mediocrity. Their new OC definitely helps. Anyway, it’s a bit of a stretch to take a single data point, namely their 2017 recruiting class, and say they’ve passed us in the power rankings. Last year, they had the 15th-ranked class while we had the 10th. The year before they had the 20th, while we had the 15th. The year before that, they had the 14th, while we had the 13th. The year before that, the first one signed by Franklin (who didn’t recruit them for the full cycle, obviously), ranked 24th while we ranked 11th. That goes double when you consider how thoroughly we’ve owned them in head-to-head battles. In the 2014 class, Kizer, Nelson, Bars, Mustipher, and Tranquill had Penn State offers, while only WR Saeed Blacknall had a Notre Dame offer. In the 2015 class, Wimbush, Adams, ESB, Hoge, Barajas, and Crawford had Penn State offers, and Wimbush and Barajas were one-time Penn State commits, while RB Saquon Barkley, OLB Manny Bowen, and CB John Reid had ND offers. In the 2016 class, McIntosh, Kraemer, Eichenberg, Boudreaux, Kareem, D Hayes, and Studstill all had PSU offers, while RB Miles Sanders, WDE Shane Simmons, and OLB Cameron Brown had ND offers. In the 2017 class, Holmes, Lugg, Hainsey, Ewell, Hinish, Adams, and Robertson all had PSU offers, while WR Mac Hippenhammer and ILB Elijah Brooks had ND offers. In the current cycle we’ve taken Jurkovec, Bauer, the Ademilolas, Simon, Lamb, and Allen from them. They’ve taken TEs Zack Kuntz and Pat Freiermuth and WR Shaquon Anderson-Butts from us, as well as three DL – PJ Mustipher, Judge Culpepper, and Aeneas Hawkins – that we essentially backed off. Nonetheless, let’s call that a push, with us coming off 4-8 and then coming off 11-3. We have very thoroughly dominated them on the recruiting trail. There’s no universe in which Penn State has passed us as a recruiting power. If their 2019 class looks like this too, then I’ll entertain the thought. But we haven’t just eaten their lunch, we’ve shaken the money out of their pockets… Read more »
How dare you bring your “facts” and “data” into this conversation.
Though the 247 Chrystal Ball says they’re gonna get Parsons back, with some recent momentum back to Penn State – http://247sports.com/PlayerInstitution/Micah-Parsons-at-Harrisburg-191239/CurrentExpertPredictions. Unless I’m forgetting something, we haven’t gotten a guy quite like that rankings-wise since Jaylon.
I’m not sure they want Parsons, as crazy as that sounds. Rumor has it Meyer doesn’t really want Parsons either, due to his, shall we say, maturity issues. Supposedly Meyer has to assign him a babysitter every time he visits so he doesn’t get himself into trouble.
From what I saw on Penn State boards, they weren’t even all that broken up that he left. Hopefully he can get his head on straight, because he’s a transcendent talent – he toyed with people at the Rivals 5-Star Challenge in Indy – and it would be a shame to waste that opportunity. I’d love to have his talent in South Bend, but with those red flags I’m not sure he would last five minutes.
And no, you’re not forgetting anything; we’ve gotten five Composite top 15 recruits since 2001. Clausen (#2 overall/2007 class), Jaylon (#2/2013), Te’o (#4/2009), Sam Young (#8/2006), Lynch (#9/2011), and Floyd (#14/2008). We might add to that next year, though, especially if Elko’s defense continues to look like the real deal.
Why did we back of f PJ Mustipher?
The staff likes Ja’mion Franklin better. First of all, they see PJ as having more upside on the OL, which pretty much everyone else does too. They probably would’ve taken him if he was open to moving to the OL later, but he wasn’t (reportedly where OSU was with him as well). Second, he profiles as more of a two-gap player, and Elko wants guys who profile more as one-gap players. They were pushing harder for Franklin, and when they got him they were happy with him and Ademilola at DT.
I know people say we should take all the DL we can, but that doesn’t always make sense. We took three interior guys last year – two of whom are already on the field – and we have two more good ones in the 2018 class. We also have a really good one in the 2019 class in Jacob Lacey and are in good position with a couple of other guys. That’s 7-8 DTs in three classes. The space is better used elsewhere in the class.
Also, don’t some people think some of our bigger ends might end up inside eventually? Like, say, Kareem?
Exactly. I wasn’t thinking about it in 2017 record brackets, but I was thinking either 10th or 11th the most likely final rating for the class with a floor of 15th and a ceiling of 6th.
Of course the floor depends on not ripping out the current coaching staff, but that’s generally a positive recruiting outlook.
Should have been more specific – I meant with regard to going forward. Given the 4-8 season, what we already have committed is pretty impressive – which I already knew thanks to the always-excellent analysis on this here 18 Stripes website – but what we have going forward is relatively uninspiring (and agree that the former should outweigh the latter in terms of overall evaluation).
And, I think if you’re right, the staff’s approach is the right one – given that we’re already pressed for roster space, no point in jumping the gun to lock down a mid-3-star for the sake of filling holes in the depth chart. As they showed last January, it’s possible to fill spots with 3-stars at the last minute (and that’s already paying off, at least w/r/t MTA).
But the Amon-Ra St. Brown thing is pretty disappointing if he does ultimately go to USC. Hopefully ESB can convince him that he should go to UCLA or something if he’s not going to ND.
I don’t know how to feel about ASB. The more I hear about his father the less comfortable I am, honestly. Supposedly he pushed Osiris to Stanford not just because he didn’t like the S&C program, but also because he was angry that Equanimeous didn’t get more playing time as a freshman. You know, on the team that went 10-3 and had peak Will Fuller and Chris Brown… He was also described in a magazine article recently as “football’s LaVar Ball,” which isn’t exactly a compliment, and he’s attached to a super-shady guy who scams high school athletes’ parents out of money in exchange for “services” that supposedly help their kids get a better chance at a scholarship. You know, the kids who play at Servite, Mater Dei, etc. Because they need additional exposure to be noticed.
I’d obviously love to have Amon-Ra, of course. But I think Dad is steering things there and the vibe I get is that he’s not quite on the up-and-up, or at least he’s not always doing things for the right reasons.
I think your casting that magazine in a bad light. The article basically says hes football LaVar Ball in the way he pushes his children to succeed, but without the outside drama. And it reasoned that Stanford was the Mom’s dream. Also, it was VERY clear he was not a fan of Longo in the article lol.
Yeah, the Longo thing has been out there for a while. Can’t say that I blame him for that, honestly… Stanford might have been Mom’s dream, but the scuttlebutt is that Dad is very much driving things.
I encourage you to read this as well:
http://www.ocregister.com/2017/08/25/inside-the-unregulated-world-of-recruiting-consulting-services/
In addition to the weasel-y “plausible deniability” comment that Brown makes in that, he was walking around with this guy at the Opening. I don’t if it strokes his ego or if he gets an affiliate bonus or what, but there’s no positive way to spin an association with that guy.
I hope we pull a really great CB to cover St. Brown for the next 3-5 years.
Didn’t Paul Moala really impress at Irish Invasion this summer? With our constant lack of depth at safety I would think we’d be fine with him committing and still try to pursue Irvin.
But our constant lack of depth at safety is probably over. Next season the safety depth chart will feature:
– Senior Nick Coleman
– Juniors Jalen Elliot and Devin Studstill
– Redshirt sophomore Alohi Gilman
– Sophomores Isaiah Robertson and Jordan Genmark Heath
– Freshman Derrik Allen
In that group, Coleman, Elliott, Studstill, and Gilman all will have had considerable starting experience. Allen has instant impact potential. Junior DJ Morgan could potentially figure in there too, but most likely he’ll end up somewhere on the Rover depth chart. Regardless, safety depth is in a much, much better place than it has been over the last couple of years.
That’s why they’re not going to take a guy there just to fill a spot. They like Moala – they had him with a hand-timed 4.4 40 at Invasion, which really piqued interest in him – but they just like the other guys better and are willing to wait. Part of the deal with Moala too is that he looks like he has a frame that’s going to add weight, so he actually could project as a linebacker as an upperclassman. And we have a pretty good linebacker group.
Irvin, as noted, seems to be the clear first choice. His coverage skills are far better than the other guys; in fact, he wants a shot at corner and the staff is inclined to give him one. He would pair really well with Allen, who profiles more as a strong safety. I’m not sure about pecking order for the rest of the guys, but Moala definitely needs some dominoes to fall for ND to consider him a take. I think the staff would be OK with taking just Allen in this class, too, given who’s on the roster now and who they have a shot at in 2019 – #7 overall Brian Williams, from Nick Watkins’s school, and #183 overall Litchfield Ajavon.
Not exactly lightweights. Our troubles are over Dude.
Litchfield Ajavon is a fantastic name.
It is indeed – he has been pre-emptively awarded membership in The Finer Things Club, which will be made official upon his matriculation. He also has a very strong facial hair game and already looks like he’s 30. Plus, he can play some football.
Awesome update, thanks for putting it all together. Seems like it could be a solid class but as always I’m nervous for more secondary so it’s nice to see of all the positions there’s the most “heat” in the rankings at CB. Now hopefully to get a few.
Is Kerry Cooks ripping is a well-known thing? I honestly had not heard that before.
I believe so. From what I’ve heard, ever since he wasn’t given a shot as DC at ND and made the lateral move to Oklahoma, he’s been telling recruits essentially that BK is selfish/dishonest. And Cooks has done a good job at it, too, since he’s a won a few head-to-head battles with ND for solid defensive prospects.
Can one of the more plugged in people corroborate?
Oh yeah. He’s been destroying ND ever since he left. From what I’ve heard most of his negative recruiting has revolved around VanGorder, but he has also latched onto absolutely everything else he could, like the Frozen Five, and just made it into this horrible place for kids to go. From 2011, Kelly’s first full recruiting cycle, to 2014, the last one Cooks recruited to ND, we signed 13 defensive players with Oklahoma offers and they signed 5 with ND offers. From 2015 to 2017, we’ve signed 2 defensive kids with Oklahoma offers and they’ve signed 14 with ND offers. It’s completely flipped.
He took a silent commit from a CB last year who then went on an official to ND a week later telling everyone he was still open, and committed publicly to Oklahoma almost immediately after he left campus. He’s gone way beyond just trashing VanGorder and his system to actively trying to screw us. He was instrumental in pushing Caleb Kelly back to Oklahoma. When ND coaches were on their in-home visit with him, reportedly talking about grad rates and other such inconsequential things, he tweeted something about not letting fake people lead you astray with meaningless information.
He’s a genuine POS. And for all his butt-hurt about being passed over for the DC job at ND, I’d also like to note that he never got that job under Bob Stoops either, and only became “assistant DC” this year – which probably means nothing other than more money, since Mike stoops retained the DC title. So where’s your grudge with the Stoops family, Kerry?
The VanGorder stuff was certainly not BS. Of course a kid would probably figure that out when VanGorder spent no time recruiting.
A kid took a free trip to ND and then committed to OU…OMG !!! that’s never happened before.
Kelly was a Fresno kid, no? OU has a pipeline with those kids. It was an upset he kept ND in the picture so long.
I’m sure Cooks takes great pleasure in kicking ND’s ass in recruiting. He would certainly know any dirt on ND from his time there and probably pointed it out. He was a pretty good recruiter at ND. Sounds like he’s doing a good job at OU.
Your post makes ND sound like the ones with the “Butt Hurt”. Just sayin.
Ehh, I think it’s OK to be upset or at least bring attention (which is that different than butt hurt?) when a former employee is really doing a hatchet job on your favorite school. Aside from just ignoring him, nothing else to do. And with the stats about recent recruiting in terms of the 2 to 14, that can’t be ignored. Recruiting’s a seedy business so it’s going to happen but I don’t think it’s a bad thing to be mad about it.
Do a better job recruiting.
What happens to these good guys (at ND) after they leave? They turn into total A-holes ? They become Svengali’s that kids can’t resist ? Yes, teams negative recruit but, Cooks has taken it to a new level? Get real. You want to be mad about it, go ahead but, give me more than nonsense, innuendo and name calling.
When your DC (BVG) doesn’t want to recruit and his defenses are lousy, you’re going to lose a lot of battles. Cook’s didn’t have to lie about that.
ND’s recruiting on the D side will improve because, Elko and Elston, lead by Polian, will work their tails off. They’ll even beat OU for a couple kids.
Fingers crossed you’re right about beating OU for a couple of kids. It’ll be really difficult with how well they’re doing as a team right now, though.
I mean, don’t take this the wrong way, I think you’re going a little too far with this bashing of Cooks. You have no idea how he was actually treated by BK, how he observed BK treating his players, or probably most importantly, what he is and isn’t actually saying to these recruits. Isn’t this all hearsay and multiple-person accounts anyway? What’s the most definitive account you’ve got on any of this? Is it just connecting sequences of events?
It just seems like, maybe he is a terrible person, maybe he is just doing his job and ND fans are the ‘butt hurt’ ones, or maybe he’s really not doing anything wrong at all. But probably we should rise above definitively assuming his kicking ND’s ass in recruiting MUST mean that he is a ‘POS’.
Totally agree. BK is often a prick *in public*; maybe he’s better in private, but maybe he’s worse!
This is how I think, too.
First, if you’re being negatively recruited then the best thing to do is give your opponents fewer things to negative recruit against and also win more games. Notre Dame hasn’t exactly covered itself in glory in recent years to make it difficult for someone to negatively recruit against the Irish.
Secondly, the game is the game. Maybe ND doesn’t like to negatively recruit all that much but you can’t complain if other schools employ those tactics. Offer a better product, win more, and recruit better. Anything else is sour grapes.
Thirdly, if someone is egregiously negatively recruiting I tend to think that for the majority of the kids that are interested in ND they can see through that. In fact, it probably would backfire more often than not.
This ^^^ 100%
I’ll reply to some of the thoughts above in bulk… Does Cooks have a legitimate gripe about being passed over for VanGorder? Maybe. It’s easy to say it’s legit in hindsight, but at the time Cooks had been a co-DC and co-secondary coach with mixed results, while VanGorder had substantial stuff on his resume. At the very least it wasn’t completely outlandish to hire VanGorder over Cooks. But even more than that, if you want to make a lateral move to try to keep climbing, fine man. But then why go out of your way to carry a grudge for years?
And I don’t buy that Kelly is so hard to work for. There are plenty of guys who have worked with him for very long stretches – Martin, Denbrock, and Elston come to mind – which is an indication in and of itself. Diaco worked for him in Cincinnati, left for Virginia, and then came back to his staff at ND. Doesn’t sound like a guy that cuts a burning swath through his personal relationships. There are plenty of other guys who have worked with him and moved on without acting like Cooks has. Like, for example, Tony Alford, who also left after getting passed over and on top of that now works for Urban Meyer, and still there are no whispers about him taking shots at ND.
As far as how much Cooks actually bashes ND, I don’t often ask for this leeway, but… Trust me. I follow recruiting a lot, probably too much, and there’s absolutely no question that he’s among the worst ND-bashers you’ll find, and it’s not remotely all about BVG. I don’t think he’s quite as bad as Greg Mattison, but he’s not far behind. Was I in the room when he said stuff to recruits? No. And recruiting analysts will never share word for word what negative stuff a kid says the coach said. But I’ve seen enough stuff from enough different sources that I’m highly confident that it’s real.
Funny how the guys that kill us the most in recruiting, are the biggest A-holes. It’s been that way since recruiting sites have been around. Especially if the coach has left ND and then had success against them.
Well, if you get divorced and then your ex-wife goes and bashes you behind your back to all your mutual friends, you’re not going to call her a great gal.
That almost applies.
I love these crootin updates guys. I don’t think I have a good understanding of all of the nuances, but I can certainly grasp that the better the talent level, the better the product.
Thanks for the update! I’m actually a member of one of the $ sites, but it’s just so exhausting to follow recruiting at this stage. I’d rather get a quick summary like this.
