Notre Dame continues a strong week of 2018 recruiting as offensive tackle Cole Mabry out of Brentwood, Tennessee has committed to the Fighting Irish.
Cole is one of the most recent offers sent out by the Fighting Irish staff. He just received his offer this past weekend during his visit for Junior Day. Obviously a big impression was made by Harry Hiestand, Brian Kelly, and the rest of the staff since Cole has decided to publicly commit to Notre Dame just a couple of days after the conclusion of his visit.

Cole chose the Irish over other offers from Memphis, Indiana, Colorado State, and Cincinnati. Sounds like the Irish got their man before his recruitment really took off.
Highlights
Cole’s highlights show a really good athlete with good feet. He’s also a very nasty, physical guy who plays to the whistle and works hard at putting the opposition on his back on every play. He’s listed at 6-6/265 pounds right now. And if he can keep his athleticism while adding another 40-50 pounds, he has the potential to be an elite lineman. This is a high-upside pickup, and it’s easy to see why Harry Hiestand likes Cole so much. It’s significantly harder to see why Cole is only a mid-level 3-star at this point in time. I fully expect him to shoot up the rankings in the coming months.
Impact
Cole Mabry’s commitment brings Notre Dame up to nine total commitments. This is the first commitment for Notre Dame along the offensive line, and just the third on the offensive side of the ball for a class which is ranked 2nd in the country by the 247 Sports Composite. This is a very strong start for the Irish, and they’ve been on a roll over the past few days with commitments from defensive backs Kalon Gervin, Derrik Allen, and now Cole on the offensive line.
As with almost all offensive lineman that have signed with Notre Dame over the past handful of years, a redshirt season will be in order for Cole. It’ll be interesting to see how well he bulks up over the next couple of years, because he won’t be able to see the field until he does. He’s got really nice upside, though, and it’s possible we see him competing for a starting position somewhere down the line.
You can never ha
Well said.
His commitment level was a definite marbry.
3 star. psshhhhh.
Plays high, not surprising for a 6’6 JR in HS. Tons of pancakes, and seems to do that without holding better than most HS OL who are determined to get the pancakes. I love that he just lies on top of defenders once he pancakes them. We had a kid who did that in HS, was always hilarious.
Seems strange that a kid this tall and this good would play RT. Is his team’s LT also a stud? Start crootin him!
He’s super raw, especially in pass protection. He has all the physical tools he needs and the mentality Harry likes, though, so the upside is there. It’s a down year for linemen, especially tackles, and we’ve gotten some really good guys the last couple of cycles who will probably all be in the two-deep in 2018. It’s the perfect time to take on a couple of projects.
Also, FWIW, from what I’ve read I’d be very surprised if Mabry is still a three-star at the end of the cycle.
I like him a lot. Tape looks like a solid top 200-300 OL. We have done very well with OTs who have the size and athleticism. And given our depth chart, developmental prospects are more than OK. In comparing his tape to some of the top 150 guys, the only real difference I see is they tend to bury their guys faster. Otherwise, few have much skill and experience pass blocking.
3 star pshhhh, was because I am not sure if you have noticed, but we only accept top 100 DBs these days. I will never use @sarcasm@ font!
As to his current and potential ‘Crootin Service rankings. Rivals has already rated him, and they basically never bump anyone after initial rating unless they perform well at camps (especially when they rate them super low to begin with). So if he doesn’t do camps, almost no chance he moves up from Rivals.
One good thing. Here are all the 5.5s we have had since 2010: Collinsworth, Jalen Brown, Farley, Prosise, John Turner, MARTINI, Jhonny Williams, Mokwuah, Tyler Newsome, Yoon, Ogundeji. We have had an awesome success rate with our lowest rated players (by Rivals).
I saw several defensive lineme throwing their arms up in the air. I’ve always thought that meant the guy thought he was being held. I liked his situational awareness too. I thought I saw a few plays where he seemed to abandon his guy, in order to pick up a critical guy and spring something loose.
Ok, I just Heard Jamie Uyeyama on a podcast say that he thought the defensive guys were throwing their hands in the air because he never quit blocking, regardless of the direction the play was going.
Tyler, is it true that Braden Lenzy wanted to pop during Junior Day? Also heard that he left South Bend with Notre Dame as his leader. Did you heard any of those rumors? I love his film. Elite speed and can play both corner or wide receiver.
I heard that ND made a big move and it’s possible they lead for him. The visit did go extremely well.
I didn’t hear anything about him wanting to commit over the weekend, though. He seems like a pretty level-headed kid and I doubt he would rush into a decision so soon.
Where is our commitment post for today? You guys are slacking.
Tomorrow
It’s funny cause it’s true! (hopefully)
Just a few more hours now…
