We know, we know, it’s been a while. We’ve been busy and the 2022 board was, well, not that big. The last time we got together, in September, the Irish class had 21 commits. It has [drum roll] 22 commits today, adding two and losing one (more on that in a bit) over the last month. For a long time the board was fairly quiet everywhere, actually. There have been 22 commitments (including flips) from prospects with Notre Dame offers over the last three months, which is not a big number, while only three new offers have gone out. There have been nine decommitments, with seven of those at least partially related to coaching turnover.
So, again, there hasn’t been a ton going on. With the early signing period opening up next week there is some stretch run drama though, and the Irish are working on holding onto the current commitments and securing a couple more.
One other thing of note… A recent NCAA rule change allows a school to offer a second official visit to any prospect if there has been a head coaching change at that school. Notre Dame is taking advantage of this to hold sort of a winter barbeque event this weekend, bringing in almost the entire committed class (CJ Williams and Amorion Walker both have state championship games this weekend and can’t make it, unfortunately). There could be some uncommitted players in too but we’re not sure how all that will shake out yet. It’s a brilliant move by the school though and we’re very glad to see them take advantage of the new rule.
The Board
A reminder on how we do this – we’ll include the entire big board table but only review prospects who are above “Cold” status and who have had actual developments of late. Speaking of which, the temperature scale:
- Hot means the prospect is on commit watch.
- Warm means the prospect has Notre Dame in a small final group and/or is a possible Irish lean.
- Mild/Mild+ means the prospect is in regular contact with the staff and has visited or has firm visit plans.
- Cool means the prospect has some level of contact with the staff and/or vague visit plans; also the default temperature for most new offers.
- Cold is a known (or reasonably safely assumed) lack of contact with the staff and/or an elimination.
Also, on the 247 Composite scores: Roughly speaking above .9830 is a five star, above .9500 is a top 100 prospect, above .9200 is a top 200 prospect, and above .8900 is a four star. Those slide around a little within a cycle and from one cycle to the next, but they’re pretty solid ballpark numbers.
Remember that of course we don’t have perfect information on all prospects – we don’t know for sure whether a prospect has or hasn’t talked to the staff outside of what’s reported elsewhere. We don’t know for sure how high prospects are on the staff’s board. We try to make highly-educated guesses at all of it, but we don’t know.

Quarterback
Commits: Steve Angeli, 0.9075, #249 overall/#17 position
Slots: 1-2
Since our last update it has become apparent that the staff would be willing to take a second quarterback in this class. They extended an offer to LSU commit Walker Howard, who was looking around well before Brian Kelly was announced as their new head coach, and when things cooled with him went after Devin Brown, who eventually committed to Ohio State. The staff may kick the tires on Nick Evers (0.9373, #155/#10), who just decommitted from Florida, as well.
What does this all mean for current Irish commit Steve Angeli? Well, he reportedly doesn’t mind it at all and welcomes the competition. This will be an interesting position to watch down the stretch.
Running Back
Commits: JD Price, 0.9228, #192 overall/#17 position
Slots: 1-2
The staff checked in on Nick Singleton when speculation of James Franklin to USC heated up, but that door remained very firmly shut. Proximity to family was a significant factor for Singleton, and nothing can change the fact that Penn State is next door while Notre Dame is not.
The class is very likely done at this position.
Wide Receiver
Commits: CJ Williams, 0.9680, #75 overall/#11 position; Tobias Merriweather, 0.9472, #123 overall/#18 position; Amorion Walker, 0.8784, #517 overall/#33 position (ATH)
Slots: 3-4
Tobias Merriweather‘s commitment seems rock solid. CJ Williams, on the other hand, continues to talk to USC, while Amorion Walker supposedly says all the right things to the Irish staff but continues to talk with Michigan. Receivers, bruh… Whether the staff will take a fourth receiver in this class has taken a back seat right now to hanging on to the three they have. We’re very cautiously optimistic that Williams and Walker will stay in the class and sign early, but it’s really anyone’s guess at this point.
Tight End
Commits: Eli Raridon, 0.9283, #178 overall/#5 position; Holden Staes, 0.9033, #271 overall/#11 position
Slots: 2
Eli Raridon jumped 260 spots in the 247 Composite rankings since the last time we met, thanks to an absurdly dominant senior season. That Holden Staes dude is pretty good too. Tight End U rolls on. As you might imagine, the staff is done at this position.
Offensive Line
Commits: OT Aamil Wagner, 0.9457, #127 overall/#12 position; OT Ty Chan, 0.9439, #135 overall/#14 position; OT Joey Tanona, 0.9392, #152 overall/#15 position; OT Ashton Craig, 0.8784, #500 overall/#40 position
Slots: 4-5
Aamil Wagner shocked the entire college football recruiting world when he announced for Notre Dame last month. In fact, judging from his family’s expressions when he picked the Notre Dame hat off the table, he just might have shocked everyone. Many assumed that Kentucky adding his brother in a GA role sealed the deal there. Obviously not, however. Wagner will need some time to fill out but has a very high ceiling; Friend of the Stripes Jamie Uyeyama, the ace recruiting analyst at IrishSportsDaily.com, set his comp as “a meaner Ronnie Stanley.” Cool, cool…
The big remaining fish here is Billy Schrauth, who has wavered between Notre Dame and Wisconsin more or less continuously since April. There are signs this race is coming to a close finally, though, and it looks like Notre Dame has the momentum as the finish line draws near. Don’t count Wisconsin out though – they haven’t let a blue chip offensive lineman out of state since 19-dickety-2.
Defensive Line
Commits: DL Tyson Ford, 0.9431, #140 overall/#22 position; DL Aiden Gobaira, 0.9166, #212 overall/#27 position; DL Donovan Hinish, 0.8796, #496 overall, #71 position
Slots: 4
Texas A&M has been the presumed leader for Anthony Lucas for a long time now. His comments that Notre Dame was “cold” on his visit for the USC game – which was definitely not cold by northern standards – didn’t bode well for the Irish. Somewhat surprisingly, then, he hosted Marcus Freeman for an in-home visit this week. We still think this is a long shot but credit to CMF for taking his swing… Hero Kanu has kicked around the idea of additional visits to Notre Dame and Oklahoma due to their coaching changes. We still like Ohio State to win it, but again, Freeman will keep swinging.
Linebackers
Commits: Jaylen Sneed, 0.9834, #35 overall/#3 position; Josh Burnham, 0.9508, #118 overall/#9 position; Niuafe Tuihalamaka, 0.9406 overall, #148 overall/#14 position; Nolan Ziegler, 0.9000, #300 overall/#31 position
Slots: 4
Since last we met, Jaylen Sneed picked up a fifth star in the 247 Composite, Josh Burnham was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Michigan, Junior Tuihalamaka was tapped for the All-American game, and Nolan Ziegler was named the Michigan AP Player of the Year for his division.
Oh, and all four made the 16-man semifinalist for the Butkus Award, given to the nation’s top linebacker. Sneed and Burnham made the final group of six; the award eventually went to Alabama commit Shawn Murphy, but the strong Irish presence among those under consideration is remarkable. The first ever high school award went to Manti Te’o in 2008; it also went to Jaylon Smith in 2012 and Prince Kollie in 2020. Maybe they’re just tired of giving it to Notre Dame players…
Defensive Backs
Commits: CB Jaden Mickey, 0.9208, #201 overall/#25 position; CB Benjamin Morrison, 0.8958, #324 overall/#34 position; CB Jayden Bellamy, 0.8830, #444 overall/#42 position
The Irish were dealt a couple of gut punches over the last week with this group. Devin Moore backed off his Notre Dame commitment after Brian Kelly bolted for LSU. There were whispers that he was starting to waver anyway, so we can’t be sure it’s 100% related to Kelly’s departure, but that at least provided a convenient excuse. Freeman just went in-home yesterday in an attempt to reel him back in; there’s some cause for optimism here but Florida looms large. Their recent theft of Corey Raymond from LSU’s staff – the one guy their fans most wanted Kelly to keep, since he’s widely viewed as an excellent recruiter and position coach – is a mark in their favor as well. We at least have a little Miracle Max style silver lining there if we do lose Moore…
The other big blow was the commitment of elite safety Xavier Nwankpa to Iowa on Wednesday. Notre Dame faded in the latter days of the Kelly tenure, but got back into it briefly after the Freeman hire when Nwankpa reached out to restart the conversation. He was a perfect fit for the university in every way, would’ve played next year, and his parents reportedly favored Notre Dame. But, like AJ Epenesa and Allen Lazard before him, he’s an elite Iowa talent who prefers to stay close to home. Such is life…
An offer just went out to Michigan athlete Koen Entringer this week, who projects as a safety at the next level. Entringer is a late arrival to football, only picking it up in his sophomore year; while he’s raw, he can fly and he hits like a truck. We’re not sure how serious the pursuit is here yet but it’s definitely something to monitor.
I think you can say “twenty” since Kiser is actually on ND.
I’m confused… Kiser isn’t an OL from Wisconsin. Is this going over my head?
It all started back in 19-dickety-2. We had to say “dickety” because the Kaiser stole our word for “twenty” – Abe Simpson
Ah – to the Wheel of Pain I go for missing a Simpsons reference.
Thanks Brendan, these are always a favorite post. The amount of info, especially on the flips from non-ND schools is just crazy good. Appreciated as always.
Thanks for compiling all of this. Freeman really only started getting in on recruiting in the middle for this class, and only came on as head recruiter right at the end, but it’s a good sign that he’s sparked some interest in people who we thought were done. I’ll be interested to see how many “I didn’t think we could get him” guys he can add to ND’s roster over the next couple of cycles.
There’s already a good case this applies to Sneed, Ford and to an extent Tuihalamaka in 2022 with Freeman on the defensive side pulling them in. And that’s 3 of the 8 highest rated prospects in this class for ND that wouldn’t be here otherwise..
The exciting part for 2023 and beyond will be Freeman focusing more on QB, RB and WR — all of which (aside from a few QB’s and Tyree) that Notre Dame did not have a ton of really high-end prospects at the skill position in Kelly 2.0. It’s been more developmental guys (Book, Boykin, Claypool, to an extent even Kyren) that have become pretty high NFL picks but weren’t like five star, clear future 1st round studs that Alabama and tOSU pull in at skill positions on a regular basis.
Are there any graduate transfer WR’s worth looking at?
We are already probably in need of one and if we lose Williams or Walker (or even both) we’ll be in a world of hurt in terms of numbers at the WR position.
Great update! Appreciate you all putting this together. It’s clearly a ton of work!
Side Q – anyone going to the Fiesta Bowl? I was surprised to see that there are still tickets available on the ND ticketing office site.
I’m planning to go. Tickets bought
yeah bought tickets a couple nights ago. was gonna wait to see if prices came down, they seem pretty steep but bought them anyways. went thru stub hub
I get that we are busy trying to keep our 3 current WR but I’m shocked we haven’t restarted some major interest in Nicolas Anderson or Bradshaw. Big schools must know something about Bradshaw but his film is off the charts. Crazy elusive. Seems like with such a bare cupboard at the WR position we would be ok taking a bit of a reach on a player.
I suppose maybe the staff already knows that Wilkins and one or more of Austin/Lenzy/Davis is returning so we feel fine with the current WR class. It just has me worried for another injury or transfer because the depth is scary thin.
Like you said, re-recruiting Austin and Lenzy is probably more important for 2022 than new recruits that are locked up or all but finished.
Really ND should be alright with: Austin, Styles, Lenzy, Colzie, Thomas, Wilkins (who seems likely to be back), maybe Davis…And Williams + Merriweather should be good enough get playing time right away if they come. Just can’t have injuries again. Thin position for what it should be but probably will take some time.
That is true. If all those guys return we are set. But I doubt they all return and if say Williams flips to USC then we are down to 8 scholarship WR. Not a good place.
Nobody seems to be all that interested in Bradshaw. I don’t believe he has worked out in person for anyone and his camp has reportedly been reluctant to share verifiable dimensions. Read into that what you will.
I would imagine they’ll try to talk to Anderson, but Venables was a strong hire there and I think most of the chaos in their class is probably done.
That is curious about Bradshaw. I think he plays at a lower level in Virginia but still his speed and acceleration seems like it would translate pretty easily.
Anderson makes sense especially since I see that he has already flipped from Oregon to Oklahoma so a second flip would seem strange but not unheard of.
Who are the WR options if they lose Williams and/or Walker? Is it mainly flipping Grimes from Wake Forest? He had some impressive stats this past season.
Aaaaand we’re out of it for Entringer, as he posted a top-4 that does not include ND. Oh well. Getting a starter-level safety in the portal is a borderline necessity this offseason anyways, but it just got even more important.
Also (and not to give away too much pay info) the Ty Chan commitment is less than 100% locked down.
The Chan stuff is weird since he committed way early and seemed solid, but that info makes it seem like Penn State has been chipping away at him and opened things up a bit more than it appeared. Having Tanona and Wagner seems like a good tackle haul, getting Schrauth would really be good for the overall o-line depth in the future. But it would help to have Chan in the hopes that you can hit on 2/3 of the tackles and be in a really good spot instead of pretty much needing both to hit if you don’t get him.
according to twitter, ty chan is 100% committed. nice to put that to rest. it would be nice if some year nd could get hot at the end. kind of sucks that a win would just be holding on to everyone. but I guess considering the attrition at other big schools who changed coaches, it could be much worse
Yeah yesterday was a sneaky weird recruiting day. The upshot is we have some unknown commitment who the coaches did the bat signal for (likely Schrauth), Chan was all of a sudden not fully in but then was fully in, and still nobody really knows what CJ Williams or Walker are going to do.
Very weird indeed. I actually feel a little better about Walker at this point than Williams, considering the latter is going to USC one last time on Sunday and said in an interview on 247 that it will be a “tough decision” on where he actually signs, and might not even sign on Wednesday it could be later in the week.
Not to cherry pick a quote down to a few words (even though I kinda did) but he sounds a lot more like he’s making up his mind and not actually committed to Notre Dame right now if he’s wrestling with himself to the point he’s not sure he’s even going to sign the first day.
Yea, with Williams, it’s not surprising insofar as what WR from CA. wouldn’t want go to play for Riley at USC? That coaching change is probably what really made it a “tough decision” for him. Though he’s one of, if not THE, most important recruit we have given our dearth of numbers at WR and our general lack of playmakers of the position (though currently some good potential).
He had a little, maybe not animosity, but was unsure about Riley because they didn’t offer him at Oklahoma and he was talking about that giving him pause, but apparently got smoothed out. Williams was trending towards being wooed by USC and UCLA all fall really, but the new coach and a very good offensive one is certainly a big last minute hurdle.
He’s said all the right things about Freeman and Rees impressing him too and is still technically an ND commit, so hopefully the “tie goes to the runner” type situation is in play. But I def would say it’s about coin flip odds right now.
One thing that I hope Williams considers is that USC might be bad for a couple of years as they recover from the recent drop-off in recruiting. Although, maybe USC will be able to replenish quickly through the portal
I honestly don’t think he cares if they are good or bad, just if he can get his catches and launch to the NFL. If he could be the 5’11 version of Drake London and have that same college career (maybe minus the broken ankle), I don’t think he would mind in the slightest given the way he has talked about offenses. He’s basically said it’s cool ND wins a lot but their offense is built around RB’s and TE’s and he’s skeptical that would be the best for him.
I’m imagining Coach Rees’s face when he read that ND “offense is built around RBs and TEs” take from Williams. I hope Tommy counted to 10 and did a 5min meditation before dialing him up.
Kyren had as exactly many receptions as Kevin Austin this year, so I’m not really sure how not to take that. Elite WR are very, very skeptical of the ND offense concept and results for WR’s. That’s famously why Amon-Ra St. Brown chose USC despite being the one guy Kelly heavily recruited, not trusting the ND offense or level of QB play enough to get him the ball.
Kelly’s gone, but CJ Williams isn’t wrong comparing the ND offense to others and finding the WR contributions to be unsatisfying from his perspective. Kevin Austin’s whole 11 game season (42 catches) was literally 3-4 games for Drake London this year (88 in 7.5 games).
Maybe it’s different now with Rees handling it, but it seems like a vicious cycle where you need elite WR before the WR’s start getting elite results — but you can’t get receiver production without the receiver material, but you also can’t get the great receivers without the production. So you’re just trapped until you break through.
But there’s no doubt perception is reality where top-end WR’s don’t see Notre Dame as being a good launching point for their career based off recent results. It’s more a matter of convincing him, “hey, come here and you’re going to change it, we’ll get the ball in your hands ‘cuz we know you’re going to make it happen.”
That has been a big sell so far with not great results, though.
100% on Williams – he is effectively not committed. Bummer because he’s our #2 commit.
It seems like Miami and us always start out super hot then fade or get passed as things go on.
Schrauth is officially Irish.
failure to post gif. but in your minds imagine Ren and Stimpy singing Happy Happy Joy Joy
I love how the perspective from days ago had some ND fans wondering if they’ve done enough on the OL.
Gotta wonder at this point if the Big-12 and Pac-12 should consider joining a conference?
Good times. Can never have enough OL, you know.
That’s a little misleading (though still useful comparison) since roughly 8 seem to be uncommitted yet.
Based on 247 crystal balls, SEC +3, B1G +2, Big 12 +1, PAC +1, ACC +1
Yeah, it’s not a final tally, but really quite telling that pretty much no one is recruiting OL like Notre Dame right now in terms of quality+quantity.
