A few weeks back we kicked off the 2022 offense big board with a comprehensive run down of where everything stood. Fast forward a couple of weeks and we don’t have a ton of movement, but we do have a couple of developments worth noting. The Irish staff used St. Patrick’s day as a huge push for the 2023 class, and it paid off brilliantly – it was one of those rare occasions where awareness outside the ND bubble was just about as high as inside, with all of recruiting Twitter chirping about the campaign. It was a lot more work than just posting some (really) funny Big Dad Energy tweets too; per NCAA rules the coaches can’t initiate contact with the kids, so the recruiting staff had to do a lot of legwork to coordinate all the calls that the coaches had with recruits throughout the day that were timed with the social media stuff.
Reportedly the whole thing was the brain child of once and current recruiting coordinator Mike Elston; it’ll be interesting to track what other tweaks he has in store for Notre Dame’s recruiting strategy. I think Brian Polian was very effective at making the trains run on time, while Elston may bring a bit more flair. We’ll see! All of that focus on ’23 and some hopes that the NCAA will lift the dead period in June mean that there haven’t been a ton of developments recently with the ’22 class. Coaches have divided attention and kids, at the moment, seem happy to remain a bit patient with an eye on taking real visits in the near future. Let’s hope.
The Offense Board
A reminder on how we do this – we’ll include the entire big board table but only review prospects who are above “Cold” status and who have had actual developments of late. Speaking of which, the temperature scale:
- Hot means the prospect is on commit watch.
- Warm means the prospect has Notre Dame in a small final group and/or is a possible Irish lean.
- Mild/Mild+ means the prospect is in regular contact with the staff and has visited or has firm visit plans.
- Cool means the prospect has some level of contact with the staff and/or vague visit plans; also the default temperature for most new offers.
- Cold is a known (or reasonably safely assumed) lack of contact with the staff and/or an elimination.
Also, on the 247 Composite ratings, roughly speaking above .9830 is a five star, above .9500 is a top 100 prospect, above .9200 is a top 200 prospect, and above .8900 is a four star. Those slide around a little within a cycle and from one cycle to the next, but they’re pretty solid ballpark numbers.
Remember that of course we don’t have perfect information on all prospects – we don’t know for sure whether a prospect has or hasn’t talked to the staff outside of what’s reported elsewhere. We don’t know for sure how high prospects are on the staff’s board. We try to make highly-educated guesses at all of it, but we don’t know.

Nicholas Singleton spoke with the staff on St. Patrick’s Day, shortly after he released a top nine with Notre Dame. Despite the size of that group, the smart money has his final three as Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State in some order. Don’t ask us to guess at the order… Dallan Hayden just completed independent visits to Ohio State and Notre Dame and was impressed by each. If you’re the type to parse recruits’ tweets – really, don’t, that way madness lies – he posted kind words about both schools but two pictures from his Notre Dame visit and four from his Ohio State visit, including one of him making the “O” while wearing a Zeke Elliott jersey. Maybe something, maybe nothing…
Gavin Sawchuk took an independent visit to USC a couple of weeks ago. He’s long been rumored to be a heavy Oklahoma lean, but it seems like he’s still keeping things fairly open for the time being. The Irish staff also caught up with Sawchuk on St. Patrick’s Day and are angling for a potential summer visit. In fact, they just might end up with all three backs coming into town in the same month, which could be awkward. Or it could be awesome. Who knows!

Right after we posted the offense Big Board launch article, Amorion Walker committed to the Irish. Thanks, kid… I said in the launch article that I thought he was similar to Addison Copeland but I liked Copeland a little better; while I do like Walker, I’ll stand by that comment and I still wouldn’t be sad if we landed Copeland too. To be fair to him, Walker missed almost his entire junior season; I’m very interested to eventually see his senior film… Evan Stewart re-entered the board but, as you’ll notice, is listed as “Cold” and is not expected to be a serious target. By all accounts neither side sees what they’re looking for in the other, and we’ll leave it at that…
No changes with Tyler Morris, Tobias Merriweather, or Andre Greene – all remain interested in Notre Dame with nothing seemingly imminent… Darrius Clemons released a top ten with Notre Dame recently, but we suspect the Irish are in the back half of that group… Kaden Saunders is still listening to Notre Dame but also still recruiting for Penn State, so it’s very hard to get a read on how that all will shake out… Xayvion Bradshaw‘s legend is growing as he racks up absurd stats week by week; he and Irish DE commit Aiden Gobaira, who has been stealing souls like Connor MacLeod, may be the biggest beneficiaries of Virginia’s spring season. Notre Dame is in good position here but I think Bradshaw will take his time and let his exposure increase.

There’s no official news on Holden Staes, but there has been a run of predictions in Notre Dame’s favor on 247 – first Notre Dame analyst Tom Loy and national guy Steve Wiltfong in February, then Notre Dame analyst Kevin Sinclair, Michigan analyst Steve Lorenz, and Penn State analyst Sean Fitz in mid March. Fitz is particularly significant as Staes was once committed to Penn State…
No developments on Eli Raridon other than to note that the staff is still recruiting him. There have been some rumblings from spring workouts that 2021 signee Mitchell Evans showed up bigger than expected and may already be headed for the offensive line, which could lead the staff to take three tight ends in this class. I don’t think that’s tremendously likely, but who knows. Stranger things have certainly happened.

Five-star Zach Rice just released a top five of Ohio State, Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia, and Notre Dame. The exclusion of Clemson is mildly surprising, but otherwise the group is as expected. I think Virginia is included as a nod of respect to the local (and early-offering) team, and I think Ohio State and North Carolina are probably his top two. Where Alabama and Notre Dame slot in and how far they are beyond the top two, I’m not sure… Notre Dame is still heavily involved with Aamil Wagner and the interest is definitely mutual, but a recent Ohio State offer has shaken things up a bit for the Cincinnatian. He talked about academic opportunities in Columbus, which always makes me nervous. One to watch…
Like Sawchuk and Singleton, the Irish staff also caught up with Billy Schrauth and Jake Taylor over (presumably) corned beef and cabbage. I think there’s no question Notre Dame is in better position – ahem, likely much better position – with Schrauth then with Taylor, but Taylor also seems more positive about the school now per recent comments he gave to 247 (free)… Carson Hinzman doesn’t seem likely to decide soon, and Wisconsin looms large, but he still communicates often with the Irish staff. Can Notre Dame pull two blue-chip linemen out of Wisconsin in the same cycle?
Good stuff Brendan. Man do I want them to land Sawchuk. His film is tremendous. What look like 8 yd. gains end up TDs with no one laying a hand on him. He just confirmed a visit I believe. I think he just might be a smudge better than the other prospects. (Singleton, Hayden)
He will indeed reportedly take an OV in June, as will Hayden and Singleton. Going to be a busy month.
Regarding Sawchuck…so you’re telling me that there’s a chance!
Wonderful update, thank you sir!
I guess it doesn’t take long for tides to change, but I feel like this WR class is shaping up to be kinda “meh” as far as the rankings goes. Would love for that feeling to be wrong if they get somewhere with Williams and/or Merriweather.
Name that year
This year is different. It’s the spring and we are in the top 5 classes! We have a chance at a bunch of 5 stars (shhhh, just ignore that we are competing with tOSU, Bama, Clemson, and local state school)! We already have 1-2 top 100ish players in our class! The coaches are really getting after it this year! Our new coach is a great recruiter!….9 months later…we have the #10 class and zero 5 stars.
I’ll believe this year’s hype when kids commit and when they sign. That isn’t to say I don’t have hope, but I’m firmly in “I will believe it when I see it…not read it on the interwebs” mode for ND recruiting. I do love these updates though. Keeps me going in the long dark off season.
Heh, fair enough. For what it’s worth, I think we’re very likely to finish somewhere around 8th and, if things break well, maybe as high as 6th.
We don’t have a chance at a bunch of five stars. Rice and Sawchuk are really the only ones on either side of the ball, and I’m bearish on ND’s chances with both. But I do expect us to sign a boatload of high-quality four-stars.
I think a finish that includes CB Khamauri Rogers (#65), LB Junior Tuihalamaka (#68), LB Jaylen Sneed (#79), RB Nicholas Singleton (#98), WR Tobias Merriweather (#104), and DT Anthony Lucas (#116) is very much in play. I’m not big on playing perfectas so I’m not going to put money on it, but the interest level from these guys is much higher than we’re used to seeing.
And there are other guys who I would consider longer shots but still on the table for now – momentum for any of these guys could change big time when visits open up. Guys like DE Cyrus Moss (#51), DE Dani Dennis-Sutton (#63), S Xavier Nwankpa (#72), WR Tyler Morris (#78), CB Jyaire Brown (#112) will all give ND a serious look.
I will admit. Despite being an ND football pessimist, I actually do expect this to be our best defensive class since 2013. I wouldn’t be surprised if momentum slowed and it fell short. But here’s hoping!
I agree with all of that, haha… On the defensive side, if we do close with, say, Rogers, Junior, Sneed, Brown, Lucas, Sherrod Covil (top 200 safety), and Jaden Mangham (borderline 4* safety), which is very much in play, you could make a case that it would be the best defensive class of the Kelly era.
The 2013 class was good but very top-heavy. It went from #2 Jaylon to #29 Redfield to #111 Rochell to #154 Cole Luke. In that same ranking span this proposed 2022 class would have #65 Rogers, #68 Junior, #79 Sneed, #112 Brown, #115 Josh Burnham, #116 Lucas, and #123 Tyson Ford.
I think there’s a chance Aiden Gobaira could crack the top 150 too – dude looks like a five-star so far in his spring season – and then who knows with those other guys like Moss, Dennis-Sutton, and Nwankpa.
Holy hell, are you guys a drag or what? Williams just set a June visit, and we seem to be in decent shape with prospects like Morris and Merriweather, as well. If the group ends up being 3 Amarion Walkers, I get it, but there’s no strong indication now that this will be the case. For as much as Del Alexander has underwhelmed as receivers coach, I don’t believe that his recruiting has been the problem.
Jury is still out. I think some of the lower-ranked guys, particularly Bradshaw and Copeland, will be very much not meh by the time all is said and done. I also think Williams might be overrated a bit, or at least not be the right kind of high-rated prospect. He’s a good receiver but he’s not a separation guy, which is what the offense desperately needs.
Saunders seems more likely to stick with Penn State at this point. Morris is definitely still on the table, wouldn’t rule anything out with him yet. Merriweather I think will come down to visits, so hopefully he’ll be able to make one.
I want to see Walker’s senior season too. He’s intriguing for me right now but I’m not ready to come down one way or the other until I see more.
Bottom line, a class of say Merriweather, Bradshaw, and Walker might not be the most Copernicus-worthy, but it would be an excellent group. For a little fun, check out Bradshaw’s sophomore (!) film:

He posted this clip from the start of his junior season, a few weeks ago:

I see Walker’s Jr. film now has his 40 time (4.56) listed. Has that always been the case? That’s not bad for a 6’4″ kid. (that’s what’s listed now) He’s certainly underrated. He reminds me of Maurice Stovall.
His coach, who fwiw is a long-tenured and well-respected guy, says he’s a sub-4.5 guy. He coached Terry Joseph and his brothers back in the day; says Terry’s brother Derrick, who played football and ran track at Tulane, was the fastest guy he ever coached and Walker isn’t far behind him. In fact ND recruited Walker because the coach reached out to Joseph and said you have to see this kid, he could play there.
I’m skeptical that he’s really a sub-4.5 guy. I’m also super extremely skeptical of the 10.5 100M that Tom Lemming credited to Walker; I’ve seen 10.8 mentioned a couple of other places though, and even that would be excellent. I don’t know what his real numbers are but I do think he’s fast. As I said above, I’d love to see more for him because I’m just not sure what to believe yet.
What’s the deal with Xayvion Bradshaw’s ranking (or rather, lack of rankings)? Don’t the kids of former athletes usually end up on people’s radars pretty early? It’s not like he isn’t putting up massive numbers, and at a listed 6’0″ 185 lbs, he obviously has enough size to be a legit DI WR. Was he late to playing football or something?
Not to nitpick, but as a born & bred Daytonian myself I have to note that we claim Aamil Wagner, not Cincinnati.
