Jeff Quinn continued his strong start to Notre Dame’s 2022 offensive line haul on Thursday when offensive tackle Ty Chan gave his verbal commitment to the Fighting Irish. The 6’6″/275-pounder out of Massachusetts is the 2nd 4-star offensive lineman to join Notre Dame’s class of 2022, and the 4th commit overall in a class that currently ranks 7th in the country.

Cohort

Ty chose Notre Dame over other offers from Boston College, Penn State, Michigan, Duke, Minnesota, Nebraska, Syracuse, and Virginia. The two main competition in this recruitment were Boston College and Penn State. Ty was actually in Happy Valley this past weekend to visit Penn State, but that visit only reaffirmed his opinion that Notre Dame is the right place for him.

Highlights

While Ty is undoubtedly going to play on the offensive line at the next level, his clips at defensive end were what stuck out to me the most from his sophomore film. They show the type of athlete he is. Excellent burst of the snap, quickness, good bend and pad level. He plays with power, but he’s also light on his feet — exactly what you want in a potential tackle prospect. He could use some work on his footwork and technique, but keep in mind this is his sophomore year film. What high school sophomore doesn’t need to work on those things?

Impact

Jeff Quinn continues to kick some serious tail on the recruiting trail and O-Line U just keeps stockpiling elite talent. Ty Chan is a tackle prospect who has one heck of a high ceiling. I’ll be really interested in seeing how he develops throughout the rest of his high school career. At this point, he may need some time to develop at the more technical aspects of the position before competing for a starting spot at Notre Dame, but he should be physically ready pretty early. It’s so tough to predict how early these kids along the offensive line are going to see the field in South Bend, but depth in the position group is sure to remain excellent as long as Quinn can keep landing dudes like Chan and Joey Tanona.

Welcome to the Irish family, Ty!
