The journey to display the best high school football uniforms in the United States enters our seventh installment. Last week, we looked at a Louisiana team getting its act together, Miami’s fashion leaders, and a huge school near the Dallas airport.

#9 St. Thomas Aquinas High School
Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Mascot: Raiders
Enrollment: 2,028 (Catholic, co-ed)
Aquinas has long been one of the freshest programs in the country and a high school with a lot of drip. As one of the premier teams in the southeast and state of Florida they’ve been a program that isn’t shy about tweaking their look through the years. However, they have stayed true to their gold helmets and typically don’t stray too far away from their core colors.
Aquinas loves to do something different with their shoulder design on their jerseys. In recent times, they’ve gone with a handful of really sharp patterns in this spot and have a very cool Art Deco-looking deal for this year. I’m sure it has something to do with a building on campus like so many of these decisions. Also, as a top Nike school, you know Aquinas has brought out a Jordan uniform too.
#8 Punahou School
Location: Honolulu, Hawaii
Mascot: Buff ‘n Blue
Enrollment: 3,000 (private, co-ed)
The premier program from the islands comes in at our 8th spot. When Manti Te’o went to school here their uniforms were very 1990’s looking and nothing special. When Marist Liufau graduated they had adopted Under Armour uniforms that were much better and at least incorporated a more plain and modern design. The past couple years, the school has jumped up into the elite category of high school uniforms.
If you’re wondering about the helmets, the school used to be called Oahu College and as you see on the chest of the jerseys they are called the “Sons of Oahu.” Hence, the winged “O” on the helmets. These uniforms have a strong 1970’s vibe, like they were transported back 50 years with a touch of modernity mixed in there. Although, the logo on the shoulder could be much larger.
#7 Muskegon Catholic Central High School
Location: Muskegon, Michigan
Mascot: Crusaders
Enrollment: 448 (Catholic, co-ed)
The smallest school on our countdown comes from the city of Muskegon to the northwest of Grand Rapids on the shores of Lake Michigan. I went back and looked through the 2016 recruiting cycle and this program hasn’t featured a ranked recruit in the 247 database so it’s not well known nationally. These uniforms should be, though.
The MCCHS gold helmet is arguably the best in the country, better than even Notre Dame’s if I were to be so bold. They used to have very Weis-era Notre Dame green uniforms for home and Under The Lights 1.0 inspired uniforms for the road, both which were quite strong. In recent years, they’ve moved away from such strong Notre Dame influences and have adopted a more streamlined look. Their all-green uniform with Catholic across the chest is quite the statement.
Up next: Yet another Florida school followed by a pair of beauties from Ohio.
I cover preps in the Muskegon area and occasionally have seen Catholic. Just for completeness’ sake, that is where current Ohio State defensive back Cameron Martinez started his career (as a QB) before transferring across town to Muskegon, the big public-school power.
I can also attest from seeing these unis in person that the photos don’t do them justice. They’re beautiful.
They are a sight to behold.
