The Opponent
Penn has had a bit of a rough season. They began the season ranked and with a lot of optimism, but they are currently on a 6 game losing streak. However, they don’t have much to lose, and that’s when teams are at their most dangerous. The boys need to make sure to stay focused and not let Penn play the role of spoiler.
Offensively, Penn is led by Griffin Scane (22g 4a) and Ben Smith (20g 6a). They are supported by Davis Provost (16g 7a), Cam Rubin (17g 5a), and Chris Patterson (12g 9a). Certainly not a bad offense by any means. The defense will need to keep them in check. Most notably, this Penn team does not generate many assists. This normally means their goals come off solo dodges, which can play right into the Irish’s hands if they are sliding right.
Defensively, they are led by the excellent Brendan Lavelle (11CT 34GBs) and Matthew Till (12CT 12GBs). Once again, not bad until but also not nearly as good as some that the Irish have played. If the offense is playing like they should, they will have a lot of opportunities to score. Between the pipes for Penn is the steady veteran Emmet Carroll with 148 saves on 52.7%. Carroll seems to be able to keep this Penn team close for a lot longer than they should be, so it would be in the best interest of the boys to keep him from getting hot.
Regarding our normal pregame questions, we have it abundantly clear what the boys need to work on this season. They have to consistently open the defense for a full sixty minutes. While we are still looking for improvement in this area, this game is more about the seniors. Let’s make to go get a win for them, and let’s stay hot going into the ACC tournament!
A quick note to please consider supporting CityLax, the lacrosse organization supporting public school lacrosse in NYC. CKav and Shawn Lyght are their proud ambassadors.
