The USILA awards were announced today, with six Fighting Irish recognized for All-American honors. Sophomore Shawn Lyght also brought home the William C. Schmeisser Award as the nation’s top defender.
The Home of Defense
Shawn Lyght is the third Domer to receive the Schmeisser award, following legendary Irish players Matt Landis (2015, 2016) and John Sexton (2018). Notre Dame has produced dozens of the nation’s top defenders that have been in consideration for this award. Jack Kielty, Arden Cohen, Garrett Epple, Steve O’Hara, Todd Rassas, Regis McDermott and others have featured high on the All-American lists. Notre Dame has long been synonymous with great defense. It’s only fitting for the top defender in the nation to be from Notre Dame.
The Scotch Plains, New Jersey native was a revelation as a freshman during Notre Dame’s 2024 national championship campaign. Lyght’s reputation at the premier lock down defender only increased this year. Not only was he good, he seemed to be effortlessly good. The lacrosse world was quick to discuss whether Shawn would be the first three-time winner of the award. This recognition during his sophomore year only intensifies his well-earned reputation.
Congratulations, Shawn! And thank you for returning the award to South Bend.
Our All-Americans
Shawn Lyght was not the only Notre Dame player recognized as an USILA All-American. Chris Kavanagh joined him on the first team, while Ben Ramsey (SSDM) and sophomore Will Donovan (LSM) joined him on the second team. Jake Taylor and goalie Thomas Ricciardelli received honorable mention recognition.
Congratulations to all our boys!
