One last, quick post before Team ND-Atl shuts it down for football season. The members of the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team past, present and future had a fantastic summer:
This past weekend, Fighting Irish alumni were well-represented in the MLL Championship Game in Kennesaw, Georgia. Scotty Rodgers started in goal for the Ohio Machine, and rookie Matt Kavanagh and Nick Ossello (who had a cup of coffee with ND Football as a safety his senior year) powered the Denver Outlaws. In perhaps one of the greatest championship games in memory, Matt Kavanagh’s 5 points were key to the come from behind Denver victory, 19-18. The Irish’s “King of Clutch” nearly lived to his reputation in his first pro championship game with a last-minute goal to break the tie that was dubiously disallowed. Fortunately for the Outlaws, they were able to follow it up with another goal to earn the championship. Congratulations to Kavanagh and Ossello for earning championship rings. The game will aslo be remembered for a field more suitable for water polo:
The future looks bright for the Irish with rising sophomore Hugh Crance and incoming freshman Bryan Costabile representing the World Champion United States team in the U-19 World Championships on Coquitlam, British Columbia. The Irish also welcome fourteen new freshmen representing eleven states, including Bryan Costabile, Brian Willets (Smithtown East/NY), Jacob Kanak (Culver Academy), Charlie Leonard (Arapahoe/CO) and Jack Zullo (Chaminade/NY). This deep and talented recruiting class is well-placed to continue Notre Dame’s successful trajectory on the field.
The team’s upperclassmen had perhaps the best summer in continuing what is considered to be the premier student-athlete internship pipeline. Kevin Corrigan and his staff have much to be proud of in coordinating fantastic placement of their players. Included in this group is Sergio Perkovic (Credit Suisse), Chris Carter (Microsoft), Bobby Collins (Bank of America/Merrill Lynch), Anthony Marini (Jeffries), Nick Koshansky (KPMG), Tyler Ruhl (London School of Economics), John Sexton (Compass Point) and Patrick Hadley (Peking University). The Irish were placed with many of the leading financial and business firms, and have also continued their success in finding opportunities for study abroad, a rare feat for student athletes with such significant obligations to their sport and at home in the classroom.
The outlook for the program remains strong going into the 2017 season. We’ll rejoin the discussion @18Stripes towards the end of the football season.
Go Irish!
