The Top 50 countdown is into the top half today. For the next spots we really have an eclectic collection of logos and ideas from universities. As always, all logos and information are courtesy of SportsLogos.Net.

#25
Youngstown State
Type: Alternate
Years: 1993-Present

Youngstown used a variation of this scowling penguin logo for nearly a quarter century. In 1993, they went through a re-brand that brought us this specific penguin. Unfortunately, the school also created a new “Y” logo that same year and in 2006 they switched to that more boring look as their primary logo. The full body penguin above with scarf and beanie is their best and still in use today.

#24
LSU
Type: Secondary
Years: 2017-Present

I think LSU can go toe-to-toe with just about any school in the country when it comes to a variety of well-known logos. Like many other schools in recent years, they now have a characterless “LSU” in purple that barely counts as a logo. The school first introduced a variety of a front-facing tiger logo in the 1960’s and tweaked it several times before recently updating it in 2017. This should be the only logo on their football helmets.

#23
Hawaii
Type: Primary
Years: 1980-2000

I thought Hawaii’s re-brand in 2000 was pretty good and they’ve stuck with it ever since. Prior to that, the football team kind of looked like a budget version of the New York Jets for a while with this swooping warrior logo for a few years. This rainbow logo was used all over the place from the early to mid 1990’s and is wonderful for being so unique. When Hawaii wore these football throwbacks recently it was fantastic.

#22
Minnesota
Type: Mascot
Years: 1986-Present

This Goldy the Gopher logo is so iconic that I was rather shocked to discover it’s not even 40 years old. We are making an exception for this mascot logo because it has had a lot more reach and popularity than your typical mascot. The stylized block “M” on Goldy’s sweater is a good primary logo for the school but this mascot logo is great, too.

#21
Northern Kentucky
Type: Primary
Years: 1992-2005

So many schools on the top 50 list have gone from awesome logos to something much more child friendly. That is the case for Northern Kentucky who for over 30 years used a few different really unique Norse logos and now they have something better fit for an elementary video game. Their previous primary logo packs so much awesomeness into a very unusually long design.
