Welcome to this website’s off-season sports sartorial content. We are counting down the world’s top 50 most iconic sports uniforms. Only current uniforms apply, we are not including one-off or alternate uniforms. Let’s stick to the basics.

Boston Celtics

The team close to winning their 18th NBA Championship comes up next in our countdown. Founded all the way back in 1946, the Boston Celtics’ uniforms have stayed consistent throughout their history. Lots and lots of green and white. Not until 2005 did Boston wear an alternate uniform featuring a lot of black trim on their green uniforms. Just 7 years ago in 2017, the team wore something that wasn’t green or white as a base color (it was black of course in a BFBS epoch).

Still, the standard uniforms haven’t changed much in nearly 80 years.

I would think most agree the green uniforms are the more iconic set for the Celtics. Looking at their home crowd, most fans in attendance choose to wear the green jersey to support the team.

As was the custom at the time, the team wore belts through the 1953-54 season and the original green uniforms were pretty basic in all white trim. Until the spring of 1965, the green jerseys had “BOSTON” emblazoned across the chest but beginning in the 1965-66 season (coming off a championship, no less) the team switched to “CELTICS” across the green jersey to match the white set, as well.

Things stayed that way for a long time with the green and white sets being the perfect inverse of each other.

Since the 2014-15 season, the green uniforms have changed back to “BOSTON” across the chest. I haven’t been able to find a reason why but of course going back to their history is probably the good and only one. Other than this, very little has changed. The team did add a shamrock to the top of the waistband of the shorts back in 1998. The Celtics also used to have a shamrock above the player names on the back of the jersey but that was removed as the NBA logo is now mandated on that area.
