Uniform of the Week

Iowa State has new uniforms for 2024. It’s year 9 of the Matt Campbell era and yes he’s still here at this school. I guess it was time for a refresh with the uniforms instead. We don’t have a ton of changes to work through today. Known as a school that looks too much like USC, I thought the Cyclones were looking far too similar to Minnesota in recent years. Let me roll through the differences for 2024:

  • The standard white helmet has a white facemask now instead of red.
  • Striping patterns are removed from the collars of all jerseys.
  • A new traditional horizontal striping patters is on the shoulders of all jerseys.
  • The home jersey now has white numbers (outlined in yellow) instead of solid yellow.
  • The Iowa State script is across the chest instead of a collar logo.
  • A new white and black helmet is in the mix. The black uniforms also look like they have off-white?

Notre Dame added its 22nd member of the 2025 recruiting class with corner Mark Zackery (0.9411).

Quarterback Madden Iamaleava (0.9492), brother to Tennessee’s Nico Iamaleava, has committed to UCLA.

Texas A&M added corner Adonyss Currie (0.9605).

Athlete James Simon (0.9249) committed to Texas.

In the 2026 class, Houston picked up the commitment from quarterback Keisean Henderson (0.9825).

Also, cornerback Dorian Barney (0.9724) committed to Alabama.

As I’ve written about, I’m cycling obsessed now and on my bike I carried a heavy-ish tire hand pump about 10-inches long, then upgraded to a smaller 5-inch hand pump, then opted for a Chinese knockoff electronic tire pump for $35 a couple months ago. So far it’s working great. It keeps its charge for a super long time and doesn’t take long to charge when you do plug it in. I haven’t had to use it for a flat yet but it only takes about 90 seconds to fully inflate a bike tire.

These electronic tire pumps are getting popular for vehicles, too. Does anyone have experience using them yet? They will probably be on my holiday list for myself and others this winter. As someone who commutes in a car this is a really handy security blanket out on the road. As long as they work.

Tunes

I could’ve sworn I’ve featured this video of John Entwistle playing bass on “Won’t Get Fooled Again” from a 1978 live performance that was filmed for their documentary The Kids Are Alright released in 1979. I couldn’t find anything in our archives. This show was the last seen with drummer Keith Moon before his death. Anyway, Entwistle was a maniac on the bass and an absolute genius.

I think this is the documentary where he walks through why he’s a bass guitar player and not a bass player. He was super serious about this aspect of his playing. And it shows! Sadly, in today’s video the frames are damaged at 2:12 and we don’t see his alien-like fill for the world. Kidding aside, you get a good view of it at 6:04 of the video. You can watch the full performance of this song HERE.

Trivia

Can you name the top 5 players in any order (bonus points for the correct order!) from our 18 Stripes Hall of Fame Pyramid of the best Notre Dame football players of all-time?

The Other Football

Bayer Leverkusen completed the German double after winning the DFB Pokal 1-0 this past weekend.

Barcelona manager Xavi was fired. Former German national team manager Hansi Flick is being hired as the new coach.

Chelsea have hired former Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca on a 5-year deal.

Bayern Munich have signed manager Vincent Kompany to a 3-year deal.

American winger and Juventus club star Tim Weah has joined the ownership group of Brooklyn FC in the USL.

TV & Movies

Why do movie studios hire famous and expensive actors to do voice work for kids movies? I was recently watching a clip on the poor movie theater numbers right now, specifically with how not super the new movie IF is doing so far. Well, not necessarily poorly but it’s going to be tough for Paramount Pictures to make a a ton of profit off a budget of $110 million.

I showed this trailer to my nearly 7-year old and she passed after 30 seconds viewing. I love when this happens, it means I’m saving $80 by not going to Regal to watch a movie. It’s a huge parenting win. Unless, it’s really a big time movie that everyone wants to see. That’s a different and I’d argue super fun atmosphere to experience with kids. But IF isn’t in that category.

A Look Back

For the second straight week I’m looking back at some more music. Today’s video breaks down the most streamed album for every year on Spotify. We’re starting with 1960 where Nat King Cole’s The Christmas Song opens up the list. I was really curious to see what 1970 would bring because that year had a huge cross-section of all-time major artists in a ton of different music varieties. The modern Spotify listener has spoken and Black Sabbath’s Paranoid comes out on top! I will say, I think this points out that one song can carry an album in the streaming era pretty far. For example in 1978 the pick is Queen’s Jazz which was another surprise.

We would have to riot if 1982 wasn’t Thriller, of course. I wonder if Tracey Chapman’s self-titled album from 1988 makes this list prior to the re-make of her song recently? I love Rage Against the Machine for 1992. It wasn’t until 1994 that we have a hip hop album. Then we get them in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, and 2007. Since then, it’s mostly been mega-solo stars starting with Lady Gaga in 2008, Bruno Mars in 2010, Adele in 2011, Lana Del Rey in 2012, Ed Sheeran in 2014 and 2017, Justin Bieber in 2015, The Weeknd in 2016 and 2020, Post Malone in 2018-19, and Olivia Rodrigo in 2021. Interestingly, it’s all Spanish-speaking artists for 2022-24 and also no Taylor Swift albums somehow!?

18S Paddock Club

It may have been one of the most boring F1 races in Monaco circuit history but the results could have the sport absolute cooking in the near term future. We also got to see one of the more wholesome feel-good stories since, well, the first F1 victory for Lando Norris just a short time ago. This season is looking so much more fun.

*Local lad Charles Leclerc grabbed pole rather easily and followed it up with a relatively pain-free wire-to-wire victory. This is not the Ferrari we’ve known in recent years. After so many missed opportunities and broken hearted moments, watching Leclerc finally win his home race was really cool to see.

*The race was boring thanks largely to an opening lap major crash between the 2 Haas cars and Sergio Perez’ Red Bull, leaving the latter’s car utterly destroyed. This allowed the front runners to switch tires under a red flag to satisfy the only mandatory one time and run until the end of the race without having to pit stop. Everyone in the top 10 finished in that exact order from where they started.

Ecstasy.

$2 million in damage.

*More drama at Alpine as Esteban Ocon dove down the inside of teammate Pierre Gasly just seconds before the aforementioned red flag crash. The move forced Gasly to rear-end his teammate, sending Ocon out of the race with assorted car damages. There’s been talk that Ocon could be suspended by the team for the next race, but that harsh move is probably unlikely. Ocon was giving a 5-place grid penalty for the next grand prix, though.

*Oscar Piastri grabbed his first podium of the year with a career-best P2 finish. With Carlos Sainz in P3 and Lando Norris in P4 the constructors title is getting far tighter than Red Bull would like. Heading into the next race, Red Bull’s lead over Ferrari stands at 24 points and Leclerc only trails 3-time champion Max Verstappen by 31 points.

Trivia Answer:

Leon Hart, Johnny Lujack, Ross Browner, George Gipp, and Paul Hornung.
