Throwback Article
Just over 2 years ago, Jordan Johnson committed to Notre Dame.
The Portal
This past Monday, rising sophomore wide receiver Jordan Johnson announced his decision to leave Notre Dame. He did not make a catch in 2020 and his only mention on the stat sheet was an early-season personal foul penalty. The 37th rated overall recruit from the 2020 class just missed out on 5-star Composite status and has been perhaps the most covered player on Notre Dame message boards over the last 8 months or so. Best of luck with his future.
Also, on Thursday 5th-year senior offensive lineman Dillan Gibbons announced his decision to leave Notre Dame and play elsewhere for his final season.
This guy is also transferring out of Buffalo:
Ohio State wide receiver Jameson Williams is transferring to Alabama
Texas’ leading tackler last year, linebacker Juwan Mitchell, is transferring to Tennessee. The Horns’ former tight end Malcom Epps has also chosen to transfer to USC.
Former high 4-star defensive back Brandon Turnage is leaving Alabama after 2 seasons with the Tide.
Former Notre Dame target running back Tirek Murphy is leaving Purdue.
Helmet Talk
West Virginia has used a wide variety of uniform combinations over the last decade-plus including quite of bit of grey. Now, this is a difficult color to use. I’ve seen the Mountaineers in a full grey uniform from head to toe and can we agree this looks truly terrible.
I like this helmet, though. Their blue and yellow colors work well as a logo on this background. But, they’ve only worn this with their full-grey uniforms which stinks. I’d like to see the gray helmet with their blue jerseys.
Recruiting
Coming out of the spring game, Notre Dame received a verbal commitment from tight end Eli Raridon (0.883) from the state of Iowa. Commit post HERE.
Outside linebacker Jaron Willis (0.939) committed to Georgia Tech.
Quarterback Braden Davis (0.925) has committed to South Carolina.
Georgia picked up the verbal from receiver De’Nylon Morrissette (0.912) from Kennesaw.
A.J. Duffy (0.966) is a quarterback from IMG Academy who committed to Florida State.
Indiana picked up the verbal from in-state athlete Dasan McCullough (0.978).
House of the Week
Is John Stamos the most famous person in Hollywood without much of a resume? Are the Dannon Oikos yogurt commercials the most popular and lasting media he’s created since Full House went off the air? Not that I’m knocking Stamos he seems wonderful, but it’s really strange how he’s carried this popularity for decades while doing a bunch of Hallmark movies.
At the 1:45 mark I think it’s so funny how his wife appears to barge into the video and then take over the tour. I’m sure they planned it this way but it still came off as really funny to me. I checked out the location of this house (it’s near where Bowmont Drive hits Mulholland Drive way, way up in Beverly Hills) and they actually have an absolutely massive circular structure about 20 feet above their house. It looks like a water reservoir or something. This one-time bachelor pad is dwarfed by the homes surrounding it.
Tunes
I’ve always been a big Beach Boys fan. Sometime in the 2003 range I really jumped into their albums and an already deep playlist became even deeper in my life. There’s always been something eerie and melancholy about “You Still Believe in Me” from their 1966 landmark LP Pet Sounds.
Why do I love this song so much? It’s difficult to explain its structure but even if you could impart that to me in a few sentences I would think it’s absurd. The song is complex and shouldn’t work. And yet, it’s magnificent.
On This Day in Sports
26 years ago on this day, the Denver Nuggets became the first #8 seed to upset a #1 seed when they defeated the Seattle Supersonics in the deciding game 5 of the Western Conference quarterfinals.
At the Cinema
The Ringer just recently covered “What About Bob?” on the Rewatchables and highlighted this amazing dinner scene. “Mmmmmm!” This is Bill Murray at his best. This will always be one of the best movies to catch on cable on a random afternoon weekend.
“I’m sailing. I’m sailing. I’m sailing. I’m sailing. I sail. I’m a sailor. I sail.” This other scene in the movie kills me and I think about it at least half the time I see people out on the water in a sail boat.
Hot Take
A recent mock draft for 2022 from the Athletic has Phil Jurkovec going 15th overall while Matt Miller has him going 9th overall. What if I told you Jack Coan will be picked ahead of Jurkovec?
Trivia
Who was the first Big 12 player taken in the 2021 NFL Draft?
Well once again dinner in Chicago is ruined.
Sad what this program has sunk to isn’t it?
Shameful. The young people these days will never know the joy of going to Morton’s at 9:30 p.m. after being outside and drinking for seven hours, then sitting on the toll road for another two hours, then driving into downtown Chicago and finding parking on a Saturday night.
Rewatchables shout-out!
I died when they spent 3 minutes processing his nonsensical question in that scene: “Is this corn hand-shucked?”
I once had a 45 with Wouldn’t It Be Nice on one side and God Only Knows on the other. As I remember it was on Capital. That would probably be worth some coin, I suspect.
If the Jets hadn’t just drafted a QB I could see them taking Jurkovec at #9. Maybe the Texans well. I’m not sure there are any other NFL franchises currently run so poorly they would do such a thing. Of course there’s always the Browns who might suddenly revert to their old selves.
If Phil does end up a high draft pick, I sure hope for his sake that the Saints don’t pick him. It’d be rough for him to have back up Ian Book again.
The Athletic mock had Phil J in the first round and no Kedon Slovis. I really don’t understand that at all.
Very odd, McShay’s first mock has Slovis 2nd overall.
Was it the ok state offensive tackle? I’m really struggling to come up with any high draft picks from the big 12.
Jurkovec going first round seems like it’s based solely on his recruiting rankings but Dane brugler does a good job. Man he doesn’t seem nearly consistent or accurate enough to be a good nfl qb
Correct trivia answer!
Looked up his name last night after my guess and already forgot it
Stamos also starred in that show “Grandfathered” along with Josh Peck (Drake and Josh) a few years ago.
Doesn’t he have a show on Disney+ now too?
Also, how you gonna mention Stamos in one paragraph questioning what he’s been up to and then talk Beach Boys in the next paragraph with no mention of Stamos touring with the Boys? (And the fact that Jessie and the Rippers covered “Forever”)
Dammit I have failed you all.
Don’t forget about Stamos in this gem — the Andy Milonakis Show from MTV — he plays himself stuck in a tree with rabies
