Writing about 20 underrated sports uniforms from college football, NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA. One uniform at a time.

Today’s submission may be the most controversial among the 20 uniforms. When Minnesota entered pro football in 1961 they nailed their uniforms with a great purple helmet featuring a white Viking horn on each side. The overall uniform striping was traditional and effective. The purple was unique and they even wore all-purple uniforms in the early 1960’s, the Vikings were monochrome pioneers!

This original uniform set lasted for quite a while. However, in 1969 the team made the change on their white jerseys to purple and yellow UCLA stripes. To this day, I always imagine Randy Moss in that uniform.

1993 saw the team get rid of their wide sleeve striping and push the lines to the bottom of the arm.

Skol!

In 2006, the Vikings made their first major redesign that wasn’t very popular and looked a bit outdated from the beginning. They even brought back the purple pants. That look didn’t last super long as the franchise rebranded again ahead of the 2013 season and this is the uniforms the team still uses today.

The UCLA stripes haven’t return to the road uniform but the home uniform went back to a more traditional look with some modern touches. From the front they have classic sleeve stripes but the white part curves into a horn. The numbers are Viking themed (I guess?) and the pant stripes are unbalanced. In certain light, these uniforms don’t look great. But at home in their stadium with the glass roof the purple looks fantastic.
