Writing about 20 underrated sports uniforms from college football, NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA. One uniform at a time.

You may sense a theme with the baseball uniforms I like. The Orioles have always looked good on the diamond. Particularly their home uniform and their alternates continue to be in their own class among MLB teams.

The team used the full body bird logo on their hats until 1966 when the much more fun oriole cartoon logo with his own cap made its debut. A full orange uniform came in 1971 and in 1975 they switched to an orange pullover jersey with white pants. That same year, the team brought out black hats with the white front panel and orange brims.

This has been one of the best hats in MLB history.

The O’s have been working the black and orange for decades.

Hearts were broken when in 1989 Baltimore returned to all black hats and the full bird logo. Although, the switch to black lettering with the road gray uniforms was very cool at the time. Not a lot has changed over the years but in 2012, the home uniform switched back to the multi-colored hat and the cartoon bird was back on both caps.

The home uniforms are so crips. My only notes for the Orioles uniforms overall are to return to that wordmark on their gray jersey. Back in 2011, they switched back to “Baltimore” across the chest and it looks way too clunky.
