The fall of Demetrius Jackson on draft night to the middle of the second round was simply a nightmare to watch unfold. He is the most purely talented player the Irish have had since Troy Murphy and was projected to easily be a first-rounder BEFORE a terrific combine circuit that saw him impress in interviews and in jumping really high.

For whatever reason, NBA teams just did not want to pull the trigger on the Mishawaka point guard, who left Notre Dame with one year of eligibility remaining. The fact that he went to Boston, a team with roughly half the point guards in the league*, just made the situation that much more bleak and sad, and a middling Summer League for Jackson did little to help matters.

*may not be an exact estimate

But not so fast, my friends. The Boston Globe reported today that Jackson and the Celtics are close to agreeing to a guaranteed contract. The terms are yet to be finalized, but it appears that Jackson is getting a legitimate shot in Boston despite their logjam at his point guard position.

Irish fans can also be optimistic about the likelihood of Boston making some sort of trade to clear some room in front of Jackson on the organization’s depth chart, a fairly likely scenario given the sheer number of assets that Danny Ainge and the Celtics currently have under their control.

We’ll be on the lookout for finalized details, including most importantly the length of Jackson’s deal, but finally some good news for the Irish fan favorite as he begins what he all hope is a long and successful career in the NBA.
