Ohio State Football

We are back in the college football ranks as we inch closer to the top half of the top 50 most iconic sports uniforms. Today, we reluctantly heap praise upon the Ohio State Buckeyes. The scarlet and gray. With a little black, too.

Plus, helmet stickers with history and are instantly recognizable across the country.

The current layout of the Buckeyes’ uniforms was created in the early 1950’s and remained remarkably consistent for decades. That is until the 2006 season when Ohio State announced some uniform tweaks and people got really mad. The controversy boiled down to changes to the home jersey sleeve stripes. For many years, the sleeves featured a wide gray background with 2 sets of black/white/black thin stripes inside. For the past 17 years, Ohio State has adopted a black/white/red/white/black pattern as seen above.

Almost 20 years without gray on the home jersey, it’s a bold decision. When you compare the two designs, it does seem insane that Ohio State hasn’t switched back yet. The gray sleeves are miles better.

Many college football fans will be familiar with the Georgia dog bones, Clemson tiger paws, and Florida State tomahawks. However, Ohio State pioneered their buckeye leaf helmets stickers back in 1968 and they remain the most famous and eye-catching in the sport.

The silver helmets and pants (well, more gray these days) provide a recognizable look for Ohio State, now they just need that color back on the jerseys again.
