Welcome to this website’s off-season sports sartorial content. We are counting down the world’s top 50 most iconic sports uniforms. Only current uniforms apply, we are not including one-off or alternate uniforms. Let’s stick to the basics.
#40
Georgia Bulldogs
Last week we focused on the Chicago Bulls black and red and this week the #40 team on our countdown is the black, red, and silver of the Dawgs. Currently the most winning SEC team on the planet controversially gets into our top 50 countdown over Alabama.
It’s hard to get much of a consensus on these Georgia uniforms. Some Dawgs’ fans think they’re the best in the country for college football (no way), others (I lean this way sometimes) believe they sometimes look better in their road white uniforms.
Georgia does have the honor of sharing a logo with another team to be featured on the top 50 countdown, surprise surprise.
The standard red Georgia helmet is certainly iconic. Introduced back in 1964 (3 years after Green Bay put the “G” logo on their helmet) it’s remained largely the same through the years. Small changes include switching to white facemasks after originally wearing gray and a brief spell from 1996-2000 where a black stripe ran through the white stripe on top of the helmet.
These helmets with the gray pants provide Georgia with a distinctive look. The jerseys are fine, although not a selling point of their look. Of course, their recent winning ways helps as people tend to enjoy traditional uniforms more when they are successful.
Grambling is going to be in the top 50?!?
Top 3 moment for the Eddie Robinson legacy.
The pants are obligatorily referenced as “silver britches.” Not gray pants.
My apologies!
Red and black is admittedly a good color combo and Georgia does it well enough. Controversially, I’ll suggest they’d be better off going full Penn State and taking the ugly Packers/Grambling/Bulldawg logo off the helmet completely.
Like their practices!
Keep the white stripe too, or nah?
I was just going to remove the one sticker, but now that you give me the option I do prefer solid color helmets, you know as a fan of a solid color helmet team.
That solid red jersey with plain white numbers is a great look. Iconic even.
