Welcome to this website’s off-season sports sartorial content. We are counting down the world’s top 50 most iconic sports uniforms. Only current uniforms apply, we are not including one-off or alternate uniforms. Let’s stick to the basics.

#39

Boston Bruins

We are bending the rules of the top 50 countdown just a little bit this week as #39 brings us to the Boston Bruins. For this 2023-24 season, the Bruins are celebrating their 100th year in the NHL and are wearing special uniforms that involve a set of small to medium-level changes while still maintaining a familiar look.

They dropped the yellow shoulder yokes (worn since 1995 and before that from 1949 through 1974 on the black jerseys), switched to a yellow “B” in black spokes on a white background (last used in 1995), and added a tinge of sparkly gold to the yellow trim on the entire uniform.

Be that as it may, we’re including Boston as an Original Six hockey club that deserves to be on this list. If you want to quibble about more areas, their uniforms have been in flux quite a lot over the years especially compared to the likes of Montreal, Toronto, and Detroit among other traditional NHL teams. The Bruins used to sport brown instead of black, yellow jerseys have also been used extensively, and they’ve introduced several other logos to their uniform package through the years.

Sadly, their socks aren’t what they used to be. Boston has some of the most unique hockey socks ever since their first team in 1924 and in the era of home and away socks for the team (since 1969) they had the cool feature of wearing yellow socks with their black jerseys. They ditched this for 2017-18, and while the all-black still looks sharp, a little piece of history is gone.
