We’re in the thick of the college football season as week 6 is upon us. Through September, 116 of the 136 FBS teams have lost at least one game. Oregon State, UMass, Sam Houston, and UCLA are the remaining winless teams in the nation. The 20 undefeated teams thus far include:

Week 6 Games to Watch

All times are Eastern. Rankings are from the AP Poll.

Clemson [-13.5] at North Carolina
Saturday, October 4, 12:00 PM, ESPN

There are some okay games in the Noon timeslot this weekend (Kentucky at Georgia, undefeated underdog Iowa State at Cincinnati, Wisconsin at Michigan) although not anything that would supersede the Sickos potential from this matchup in Chapel Hill. Clemson is 1-3 and an incredible 57th in the latest SP+ rankings. The Bill Belichick experiment is currently 2-2 and ranked 86th by SP+ right now. If the Tigers are truly crumbling this game will be close. North Carolina is so, so bad offensively, I think Clemson does enough to win comfortably.

It can get worse, Dabo.

#9 Texas [-6.5] at Florida
Saturday, October 4, 3:30 PM, ESPN

As discussed a million times, Florida’s schedule is brutal and here they go again with another ranked team lining up on the other side of the field. The Gators’ offense (17 combined points against LSU and Miami) cannot be trusted. Then you take a look at Texas and they’ve been in a similar ballpark of offensive disappointment this year, too. Man, I feel like one of these days we’ll get a random upset win for Florida and it’s likely to come in the Swamp. This is surely a defensive battle with Vegas figuring it’ll be fairly close. I really feel big, big problems for Texas this weekend. Let’s roll with the home team.

Arch Manning yips is going to trend this weekend.

#16 Vanderbilt [+10.5] at #10 Alabama
Saturday, October 4, 3:30 PM, ABC

This is the first time in 87 years (2nd time ever) that Vanderbilt and Alabama are playing while both teams are ranked in the AP Poll. Clark Lea is Doing Good Thingsâ„¢ at a level previously deemed impossible. He’s also trying to establish a winning streak against the Tide this weekend, too. That hasn’t happened for the Commodores since winning both matchups in 1955-56. Alabama is coming off the Georgia win, is there a let down opportunity here? With the stinging loss to the ‘Dores last year, I don’t think so.

#24 Virginia [+7.5] at Louisville
Saturday, October 4, 3:30 PM, ESPN2

It’s ranked Virginia at undefeated Louisville just like we all predicted. I’m sure they won’t be able to keep it up but a win here and you can kind of see the Hoos with a path to the ACC Championship Game. Which allows me to mention how terrible the round robin scheduling is in the ACC this year. Currently top of the conference Georgia Tech, Virginia, and Duke all miss Miami during the regular season. Louisville doesn’t face Georgia Tech. Virginia and Georgia Tech don’t play each other. Virginia just beat Florida State and the Noles don’t play Georgia Tech, Louisville, or Duke. What a mess this league is going to be at the end. Anyway, the Cavaliers come back down to earth this week.

#11 Texas Tech [-10.5] at Houston
Saturday, October 4, 7:00 PM, ESPN

I don’t think many have paid attention to undefeated Houston–I know I haven’t! They have a pretty solid defense but the Connor Weigman-led offense has been clunky and inefficient. Texas Tech is ready to welcome back quarterback Behren Morton from an injury suffered during the middle of the Utah game, plus the Red Raiders are coming off a bye. According to the advanced stats, there’s a pretty sizable gulf between these teams despite their records. Tech is no. 5 in the SP+ rankings right now! I’ll call for a blowout victory.

McGuire has that dawg in him.

Texas Tech 40
Houston 16

#3 Miami [-4.5] at #18 Florida State
Saturday, October 4, 7:30 PM, ABC

It occurred to me that this storied modern rivalry doesn’t have a nickname. The “Sunshine Showdown” is a thing but no one actually uses that. I’m listening to any suggestions from our readers. Can we come up with something? How good is Miami, really? Following last week’s debacle of a loss in Charlottesville it sure seems like Las Vegas is expecting Florida State to be ready for a bounce back performance. Of course, Miami already has the win over Notre Dame under the belt but this had been shaping up to be the crown jewel victory on the season over previously highly ranked FSU. The Canes do not play any further currently ranked teams after this, by the way. There are some tricky games remaining (Friday night versus Louisville and at SMU) but if Miami grabs this win their odds of winning the ACC during the regular will be sky high. Which is exactly why it won’t happen.
